ERP For Ecommerce: Is It Necessary?
The world is constantly shrinking. Although it is growing in many senses of the word, it is also becoming increasingly easy for us to reach across the world and communicate and do business with each other.
The major boom in ecommerce is probably one of the best examples of how this world is shrinking. Rather than making a trip out to our local stores, more of us are shopping online. Instead of just buying whatever is available in the town that we live in, we can find and purchase a product that is handmade in a village on the other side of the world if we want to.
With literally millions of online shops, the Internet can be compared to a worldwide mall. You could spend your entire lifetime there and still not see it all. Each of these ecommerce websites is unique and each of them has a lot more going on behind the scenes than just the “store” that you see on their website.
Creating a business that operates online brings up many issues and requires very careful planning and a good understanding of various computer systems and how they work.
There are many different parts to all ecommerce businesses. There are all sorts of assets to manage. Financial resources and materials, human resources, various software programs including shopping cart software. ERP ecommerce systems bring together the production systems and administration of the business.
Configuring and implementing an ERP ecommerce system is not a thing for the do-it-yourselfer. It is a very complex process and requires a very good understanding of much more than just your business and how it operates. It is a very specialized type of computer software program that really needs to be done by professionals.
Although it may seem like a huge expense, implementing an ERP system by using a consulting company is almost always going to be a more efficient way to do it in terms of both time and cost.
Before you decide to get into it, do some careful research into what types of companies can best profit from ERP systems. Find out why they do and what the characteristics of a company that needs an ERP actually are. Maybe your company will be much more efficient with one, but on the other hand, it may not be worth your while at all. You need to know which is the case with your particular ecommerce business.
As a business owner, you already know that you cannot do everything on your own. You also know that you can’t always completely trust the advice you are given. Do some of your own research and combine what you learn with advice you are given from employees and friends before you decide whether or not you need an ERP.
